Apple iPhone Duo Debuts as a Powerful New Foldable iPhone for 2026
Apple iPhone Duo
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of iPhone Duo, a device that represents one of the biggest design changes in iPhone history. Unveiled at Apple’s September 2026 event by the company’s new CEO John Ternus, iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone and introduces a completely new way to use the company’s most important product. The device combines a compact smartphone experience with a larger tablet-like display, allowing users to switch between the two by simply opening or closing the phone.
When closed, iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display designed for everyday tasks and one-handed use. Opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest screen ever offered on an iPhone. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, helping content transition smoothly between the two screens. Apple has also introduced a nano-texture finish on the larger display to reduce glare and minimise the visibility of the foldable crease. The launch is particularly significant because it marks the first major iPhone announcement under Ternus, signalling a new era for Apple’s hardware strategy.
The foldable design is supported by a precision-engineered hinge and a titanium construction designed to make the device both premium and durable. Apple says iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever when opened, while still incorporating a dual-battery architecture to support all-day use. The phone is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, which also appears in the latest iPhone 18 Pro models. A custom vapour chamber helps manage heat during demanding tasks, including multitasking, gaming and AI workloads.
According to Apple, the A20 Pro delivers significant improvements in sustained performance while its Neural Engine provides additional computing power for on-device artificial intelligence. The larger screen also unlocks a new approach to productivity. iPhone Duo introduces Split View on iPhone, allowing two apps to run side by side. Users can also open multiple windows of the same app, save app combinations and interact with Siri AI while viewing content simultaneously. Later this year, Apple Pencil support will further expand the device’s productivity capabilities.
Apple is also using iPhone Duo to push its growing artificial intelligence strategy. The device supports Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI experience rolling out with iOS 27. Apple says the updated Siri is designed to be more personal, conversational and capable of understanding information across a user’s messages, emails, photos and onscreen content. The larger foldable display gives these AI features more space to operate alongside other apps and information.
Photography has also been adapted for the new form factor. iPhone Duo includes a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, an advanced front camera and a FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display. The folding design creates new possibilities for capturing photos and videos, including hands-free positioning and dual-screen experiences. Apple has also integrated Touch ID into the side button, providing authentication whether the phone is open or closed. The device will be available in two colours, Star White and Night Sky, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
iPhone Duo is positioned firmly in the ultra-premium smartphone category. In India, pricing starts at INR 299,900 and $1,999 in USA, making it one of the most expensive consumer devices Apple has introduced. Despite the premium price, the launch gives Apple a long-awaited entry into the foldable market, where competitors have spent years experimenting with larger flexible displays and multitasking experiences. Apple is betting that its combination of hardware, software and ecosystem integration can make the foldable format more compelling for mainstream users.
Customers in more than 70 countries and regions, including India, will be able to pre-order iPhone Duo beginning at 5:00 a.m. PT on October 16, 2026. The device will officially become available on October 23. With its dual displays, A20 Pro chip, advanced cameras and expanded AI capabilities, iPhone Duo is more than a new iPhone model. It represents Apple’s attempt to redefine what the iPhone can become as smartphones move beyond the traditional single-screen design.
