HUAWEI Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN takes the foldable smartphone concept a step further by introducing a three-part folding design that transforms one device into three different screen configurations. Huawei describes it as the world’s first commercial tri-fold smartphone, and its defining feature is a large flexible OLED display that folds through two hinges.
In single-screen mode, the device provides a 6.4-inch display for conventional smartphone use. Opening one section expands the screen to 7.9 inches, creating more room for reading, multitasking and media. Fully unfolded, the Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN becomes a 10.2-inch tablet with a 2232 × 3184 resolution and 3K-class clarity. The OLED panel supports an adaptive refresh rate of up to 90Hz, while the device weighs approximately 298 grams. This three-stage design allows the same hardware to adapt to different situations without requiring users to carry a separate tablet.
The engineering behind that transformation is equally important. The Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN uses Huawei’s dual-track Tiangong hinge system, designed to support both inward and outward bending as the display moves between its configurations. Huawei says the hinge incorporates ultra-high-strength steel components, while the composite screen structure is designed to improve resistance to deformation and impact. When fully unfolded, the display is divided across three sections, with each portion measuring only a few millimetres in thickness.
The phone also uses a composite structure and flexible display materials designed to handle the different forces created when the screen bends in opposite directions. Huawei has paired the folding architecture with an IPX8 rating for water resistance on the global specification page. The result is a complex mechanical system built around keeping a very large flexible display usable across three different physical forms.
Despite its unusual form factor, the Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN carries hardware aimed at flagship-level smartphone use. The device comes with 16GB of RAM and is offered with 512GB or 1TB of internal storage, depending on configuration and market. Its camera system consists of a 50MP Ultra Aperture main camera with optical image stabilisation and a physical aperture ranging from F1.4 to F4.0, alongside a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 12MP periscope telephoto camera with optical stabilisation.
Huawei lists approximately 5.5x optical zoom and up to 50x digital zoom. Power comes from a 5,600mAh typical-capacity battery, with the rated capacity listed at 5,500mAh. The phone supports up to 66W wired Huawei SuperCharge and up to 50W wireless SuperCharge, giving the large foldable display a substantial battery and charging system.

The Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN ultimately stands out because its three-screen architecture changes what a foldable phone can physically become. Huawei has therefore focused the device around flexibility in both its physical design and how the screen can be used. The 16:11 unfolded display ratio also gives the device a broader workspace than a typical smartphone, while the 3K resolution is designed for detailed viewing across its large surface. With its dual-hinge mechanism, flexible OLED panel, large battery and multi-camera system, the Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN represents one of the most ambitious approaches to foldable hardware currently available.
