Equal AI Wants to Put an AI Assistant Between You and Every Call
Spam calls have become an unavoidable part of using a phone, but the problem extends beyond obvious scams and telemarketing. Delivery agents, financial service providers, recruiters, sales teams, and unfamiliar numbers can all interrupt the day, forcing people to answer calls simply to discover whether they matter. Equal AI is approaching the problem by allowing its AI assistant to answer calls on a user’s behalf.
Instead of simply identifying the caller, Equal can communicate with them, understand their intent, and tell the user who called, why they called, and what needs to happen next. The company was founded by Keshav Reddy in 2022 and launched its consumer AI call assistant in 2025. The broader ambition is to make Equal a personal AI layer that handles everyday interactions rather than another app that simply provides information.
From Spam Filtering to Actually Handling the Conversation
Equal’s approach goes beyond traditional caller identification. When an unknown call arrives, the assistant can interact with the caller and gather context before the user decides whether the conversation deserves their attention. For situations such as deliveries, the app can provide quick responses that the AI reads back to the caller, while users can also type a custom message for the assistant to communicate. After the interaction, Equal provides call recordings, transcriptions, and summaries so users can understand what happened without listening to the entire conversation.
The company says the assistant supports more than nine Indian languages, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the market and the importance of speech technology that can handle natural conversations rather than relying solely on English.

Equal AI Raised $30 Million to Build India’s AI Assistant
The company’s bet on AI-powered communications attracted significant investor backing in 2026. Equal AI raised $30 million in a Series B round co-led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, with participation from Think Investments, Valiant Fund and several individual investors. The funding brought the company’s total capital raised to more than $42 million and is being used to expand its call assistant capabilities while moving into broader areas such as communications, financial services, lifestyle assistance, and concierge services.
Equal AI reported more than one million monthly active users and around 350,000 daily active users around the time of the funding announcement. More recent company and investor updates have reported more than two million monthly active users.
Equal AI Wants to Become More Than a Call Screening App
The bigger opportunity for Equal AI lies in what happens after a call is screened. The company is positioning the product as a personal assistant capable of understanding conversations and taking actions on behalf of its users. Its roadmap has included capabilities such as messaging delivery workers with consent, making outbound calls to book appointments, and expanding into shopping, financial services, communications, and lifestyle assistance. That would move the product from a defensive tool that protects people from unwanted interruptions toward an active digital assistant that manages routine interactions. Equal is already available through both Google Play and the Apple App Store, giving the company a path toward becoming part of the everyday smartphone experience.

The Real Test Is Whether People Trust AI With Their Phone
Equal AI’s proposition ultimately depends on trust. A call assistant needs to understand different accents and languages, distinguish genuinely important calls from unwanted ones, communicate naturally, and avoid taking actions without appropriate consent. The company says its assistant is built using speech recognition, automatic speech recognition, speech generation models, and its own orchestration layer. Privacy is equally important because the product deals directly with conversations and potentially sensitive information.
Equal’s privacy policy says it processes personal information under applicable Indian data protection requirements, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and Rules. If Equal AI can make AI-mediated phone communication reliable enough for everyday use, the humble phone call could become one of the first places where consumers routinely delegate real-world interactions to an AI assistant.
